Isolate Acetylsalicylic Acid
Here, I will isolate Acetylsalicylic Acid from Aspirin tablets.
First, measure out 150mL of Isopropyl Alcohol. Then add 100 Aspirin tablets. This should be added to a hotplate set on medium heat. After about an hour, the mixture should be filtered to remove binders and other impurities. Then an equal quantity of ice-cold distilled water should be added to the filtered solution. Acetylsalicylic Acid will precipitate due to its low solubility in water. The mixture should be put in an ice bath to cool. When the mixture has cooled, filter to isolate the Acetylsalicylic Acid. This should be dried, then added to an airtight container.
